What is Documentary Style Photography? | Round Rock Family Photographer

If you've been looking into documentary style photography, you've probably noticed that it looks a little different from the family photos you grew up taking.

Kids aren't sitting perfectly still with matching smiles. Parents aren't constantly reminding everyone to "look at the camera." Instead, everyone is laughing, playing, cuddling, and actually interacting.

That's because your session isn't just about taking pictures. It's about spending intentional time together.

This isn't your grandma's photo session.

The heart of my sessions is play.

We'll run. We'll laugh. We'll play games. There will probably be impromptu hugs, surprise kisses, and plenty of giggles. We might dance to music or talk about dinosaurs, Taylor Swift, soccer, or whatever your kids are obsessed with this week.

I've photographed more than 300 families, so I promise you won't be left wondering what to do next. I'll guide your family the entire time with prompts and activities that keep everyone connected without making anything feel forced.

Documentary Style Photography Is About Connection

As moms, we're usually moving a million miles an hour.

We're packing lunches, answering questions, remembering appointments, and thinking three steps ahead all day long. Even the fun moments can feel rushed or fractured, ya know?

Your session is one of the few times where someone else gets to carry the mental load.

My job is to guide your family while you simply enjoy being together.

I want you to notice the way your toddler reaches for your hand. The goofy faces your third grader still makes when nobody's watching. The way your kids melt into your arms after they've finished running around.

Those little moments are the ones that disappear the fastest.

Yes, We'll Still Get the "Grandma Photo"

Don't worry. I'm not sending you home without one where everyone is looking at the camera. We'll absolutely take a few classic portraits that are perfect for holiday cards or Grandma's fridge.

But after that?

We're going back to what matters most.

The photos you'll hang in your hallway. The one that becomes your phone background. These are the images that instantly bring you back to what life actually felt like during this season.

Because ten years from now, I don't think you'll remember whether everyone smiled perfectly.

You'll remember that tiny nose wrinkle when they laughed or the way they wrapped both arms around your neck. I mean… those are the things we love the MOST as moms

Time is going to keep moving whether we like it or not. They’re changing every damn day it feels like!! (I know i’m not the only mom who scrolls through her camera roll at 10:30pm looking at baby photos haha)

Here’s the thing: documentary photography gives you a way to hold onto the feeling of this season just a little longer. Because these kinds of photos look like how life feels.

And if you ask me, that's so so much more valuable than a perfectly posed picture.
