What to Bring to Your Mini Session | Round Rock Family Photographer

You booked your family photos! You’re ready to go! But if you’re wondering what to bring to your mini session - this is for you!

The short answer?

Probably less than you think.

Okay so here’s the thing: mini sessions are designed to be quick, easy, and low stress. While they’re much shorter than a full family session, you would be surprised how much we can capture in just 15 minutes. Some of my favorite galleries have come from mini sessions because families show up ready to have fun and simply enjoy being together.

If you're already juggling school schedules, sports practices, meal planning, and the hundred other things that live in your brain, let me take one thing off your plate. You do not need to overthink this.

This post will walk you through what to bring to your mini session!

If Your Goal Is Simply Documenting This Season:

If you're booking a session because you want updated family photos, I actually recommend keeping things simple.

You don't need to bring toys, props, signs, or a long list of ideas. Your family is enough.

I will walk you through what to wear to create a cohesive look together as a family. Beyond that… ya don’t need much!!

We'll spend our time playing, walking, snuggling, laughing, and interacting naturally. Those are usually the photos parents end up loving most anyway. The way your toddler reaches for your hand. The goofy grin your middle schooler gives when they finally let loose. The little moments that already make up your everyday life.

That is the stuff worth remembering.

What to Bring to Your Mini Session If You Want Something Extra

If there is a special activity your family genuinely enjoys, feel free to bring it along.

A few ideas:

  • A blanket to sit on

  • Popsicles on a warm Texas evening

  • A favorite toy truck for your toddler

  • A simple book to read together

  • Flowers your kids can hold or play with

The key word here is simple.

Anything that feels natural to your family will photograph well. Anything that requires a lot of setup probably isn't the best fit for a mini session.

BUT… if you’re celebrating a Milestone? Here’s some more simple ideas!

Mini sessions are also a great option if you're celebrating something special. Maybe your baby is turning one. Maybe your child is graduating kindergarten. Maybe your senior is getting ready to head off to college.

For milestone sessions, I recommend bringing one or two meaningful props that help tell the story.

Think:

  • Balloons

  • A birthday hat

  • A cap and gown

  • A letter board

  • A favorite stuffed animal

Simple details can go a long way without taking time away from photographing.

Remember, time is limited…

The biggest thing to keep in mind is that these sessions move quickly.

Most mini sessions are scheduled back-to-back, which means there usually isn't extra time for outfit changes, elaborate setups, or running back to the car to grab forgotten items. The more time we spend setting something up, the less time we have for actual photos.

My goal is always to make this process feel easy. I’ll guide you every step of the way so you don't have to wonder what to do next.

When you're deciding what to bring to your mini session, remember that less is often more.

Show up, love on your people, and let me take care of the rest.
