Documentary Style Newborn Session | Austin Family Photographer
I can’t wait to share this documentary style newborn session with you!
There’s just something about in-home shoots that makes them feel so special. While I absolutely adore my studio sessions, there’s a different kind of magic that happens when I step into a family’s home. The space where you’re living out those blurry, sleep-deprived, love-filled first weeks is the same space that becomes the backdrop to your story. Years from now, when you look back at these images, even the couch you cuddled on or the spot by the window where you rocked your baby will bring the memories rushing back.
That’s the magic of documentary style newborn photos.
This family welcomed me into their home to capture their brand-new baby boy, who had already been through quite a journey. He made an early, unexpected arrival and spent time in the NICU before finally making it home. As a mom who has walked that road myself, I know how heavy and heart-wrenching it feels to leave your baby in the hospital. (Truly one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life). And I also know how incredibly precious it is when you finally get to bring them home. NICU babies — and their families — will always hold a special place in my heart. (As will organizations like Hand to Hold, who helps families navigate this time)
But they were all home together as a family now, and it made for a beautiful afternoon in their light-filled house! As an Austin family photographer, I had so much fun stepping into their space and creating some images for them.
Big brother wasn’t quite sure what to think of his new role, giving us the sweetest mix of curiosity, excitement, and those “wait a second, what is happening?” toddler expressions. He zipped around the house on his little white Vespa, stole a few snuggles, and made sure the family dog got in on the action too. The older siblings, on the other hand, were already smitten… doting on their baby brother with all the tenderness in the world.
The outfits were simple and timeless: soft neutrals for mom, dad, and baby, with the boys in coordinating striped tops that made their bond shine through even more.
The natural light streaming in through the big living room windows gave everything a cozy vibe… the perfect setting for this family to just be themselves together. This is why I love the documentary style of these sessions.
This shoot was such a beautiful reminder that photography isn’t about perfection; it’s about connection. The cuddles, the laughter, the chaos, and the quiet… in my opinion: that’s where the story really lives. And those are the moments worth holding onto forever.
Thank you for letting me capture your family during this sweet and precious time!
