What to Wear to Your Family Photo Session
This is a quick guide to putting together outfits for your family session so that you feel like a pro before you ever step in front of the camera!
This guide is here to walk you through the process of putting together cohesive family portrait outfits.
In photography, there are some colors that photograph better than others. And really simple rules to easily put together outfits for the whole family.
I’ll walk you through it all! So grab your Celsius, and curl up on the couch to scroll through this guide. And let me know if you have any questions at the end! I’m here to help 🫶🏻
The first step is to understand your color palette.
You want to stick to neutrals and earth tones. The good news is: there are shades of almost every color that works.
👉🏼 Instead of bright oranges, choose rust…
👉🏼 Instead of bright blue, go with dusty hues or deep navy…
👉🏼 Instead of bright greens, choose moss or deep forest greens
So don’t be afraid to bring in your favorite colors, just pay attention to the shades and hues.
BUT: I recommend avoiding most pinks and reds as a general rule of thumb. Those can cast a weird color on skin tones in photos.
Start with one anchor outfit and build the rest around that.
Start with one piece you really love and build from there. If you find something with a cool texture or small print that you want to build off, it always helps to have an anchor to keep ground the outfits and keep things cohesive.
What about prints?
A good rule of thumb is to keep prints small. Loud, big prints can overtake a photo. And don’t mix TOO many prints. Usually one or two pieces with a small print is enough, without feeling chaotic.
Think about textures…
This is my favorite secret hack to make your family photo outfits look so luxe and intentional. Play with textures! Think:
⚡️ Chunky knit sweater
⚡️ Waffle knit fabric
⚡️ Linens
⚡️ Corduroy
⚡️ Silk
⚡️ Worn soft denim
⚡️ Leather
